Tips for Adult Dog Crate Training
Dog crates are often viewed as punishment zones for the dogs because of the way dog owners used the crates before. However, dog crates are actually made to be a little haven for dogs- their very own den.
Dogs love dens and if you are a dog owner, you may find your dog/s loving to rest and relax in your home’s den. This is the signal for you to get your dog its own very on little den, a crate that is not only for indoors but also for outdoors. These will both require crate training dogs though.
Crates will still be treated as foreign and stranger to the dog, especially the adult ones. This is the reason why crate training dogs is best during the puppy stage. Puppies do not normally associate crates with anything because it is completely new to them. Adult dogs, on the other hand may have a negative experience with crate training dogs already so training adult dogs for dog crate use may be tricky.
However, crate training dogs in the adult stage of life is not impossible. Here are some helpful tips that you can use in crate training dogs in the later years.
First of all, buy a crate that is suitable and appropriate for your dog’s size and type. There are various types of crates for different types of dogs. When you buy a crate, ask the shop owner for some assistance in choosing the right type for your dog.
Next, put the crate on the usual resting spot of your dog. Dogs do not like resting in noise-filled and brightly lit rooms. One tip for crate training dogs is to sit beside the crate to help your dog associate the crate with your care.
Next tip is to put some of your old clothing inside the crate as cushion for the dog. Your scent may be the key in training the dog to use the crate. If the dog successfully goes inside, do not leave the dog right away for it not to feel that the crate is a signal for separation. Do not close the door.
One tip to do the trick is to put the dog’s favorite toy inside the crate. Reward your dog with its favorite treat. Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool for crate training dogs.
Last important tip is to never punish your dog using the crate by locking it inside. Doing this may give the statement to the dog that crates are for punishment. If you do this, you will find yourself going back to the very first step of the training again.
